Minister of Digital Transformation, Mr. Andonovski, Delivers a Speech at IBU

The Minister of Digital Transformation of the Republic of North Macedonia, Mr. Stefan Andonovski, delivered a compelling speech at the International Balkan University (IBU).

 

Mr. Andonovski participated in a panel discussion on the topic “Bridging the Digital Divide: AI and Digitalization for Inclusive Development,” organized by IBU’s Balkan Research Center (BRC).

 

Alongside the minister, Prof. Dr. Lutfi Sunar, Rector of IBU, also addressed the audience, emphasizing the crucial role of artificial intelligence (AI) and digitalization in today’s rapidly changing world.

 

In his impactful address, Minister Andonovski underscored the transformative potential of AI and digitalization for North Macedonia, calling for swift action to capitalize on these global trends. He highlighted the projected growth of the digital economy, which is expected to contribute 24.3% of global GDP by 2025, stressing the need for North Macedonia to accelerate its digital transformation in order to remain competitive.

 

The Minister emphasized that digitalization could revolutionize key sectors such as education, healthcare, and public administration, improving efficiency, transparency, and reducing corruption. In particular, he pointed out that AI could be a game-changer, offering solutions to critical challenges like early cancer detection and personalized education.

 

However, Minister Andonovski also highlighted the importance of investing in education and skills development to prepare the workforce for the digital economy. His speech concluded with a call to action, urging North Macedonia to embrace these technological advancements and position itself as a leader in the Balkans' digital transformation.

 

In his address, Prof. Dr. Lutfi Sunar echoed the Minister’s points, emphasizing the crucial role of AI and digitalization in shaping the future. He stressed that these technologies are not fleeting trends but essential drivers of progress in every sector.

 

Rector Sunar outlined IBU’s commitment to integrating AI and coding into its curriculum, announcing plans to introduce coding and programming courses for all first-year students. He also highlighted that AI-focused lectures would be included in all study programs, ensuring every student is equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to thrive in a digitally-driven world.

 

Sunar emphasized IBU's dedication to preparing students for the challenges and opportunities posed by these technologies. By embedding these subjects into the academic framework, IBU aims to contribute to the development of a skilled workforce capable of leading innovation both in North Macedonia and globally.

 

Moderator of this panel was Asst. Prof. Dr. Flamur Ismaili, Director of the Balkan Research Center (BRC).

- Prof. Dr. Aleksandra Porjazoska-Kujundziski: “A presentation on a Jean Monnet-funded project exploring AI's impact on traditional education methods, focusing on both its benefits and potential challenges.”

- Prof. Dr. Bejtullah Demiri: “AI and Ethics in the Digital Age” – This topic addresses critical issues such as AI's implications in decision-making, the risk of algorithmic bias, the need for transparency, and the protection of individual privacy.

- Asst. Prof. Dr. Ervin Domazet: “Advancements in AI Systems” – This presentation highlights how AI technologies are transforming industries like healthcare, education, finance, and transportation, enabling smarter decision-making, personalized solutions, and greater efficiency.

During his visit, Minister Andonovski had the opportunity to tour the impressive IBU premises, including the state-of-the-art Balkan Laboratories, the renowned Balkan Dental Clinic, the innovative Balkan Information Technology (BIT) Loft, the newly designed studios of the Faculty of Art and Design, and the well-equipped IBU Library.

 

Accompanying the Minister was Rector Prof. Dr. Sunar, who provided insightful details about these exceptional facilities and shared the university's exciting future plans, showcasing IBU's commitment to excellence and growth.
