This week, we delve into the remarkable path of Cihad Aliju, an alumnus whose passion for storytelling and commitment to uncovering the truth have made him a distinguished journalist at Anadolu Agency.

- A Multicultural Beginning

Born in Bursa, Turkey, to an Albanian father from Skopje and a Turkish mother, Cihad’s multicultural upbringing shaped his identity. Having lived in Bitola and the picturesque village of Kozjak in the Prespa region, he grew up speaking Macedonian, Albanian, Turkish, and English.

“My personal background is very diverse,” Cihad shares. “I pursued secondary education in electronics and telecommunications, which led me to study Information Technology at IBU. I chose IBU for its strong academic framework and multicultural environment.”

Although his career eventually veered away from IT, the critical thinking and analytical skills he honed at IBU proved invaluable. His time at the university was not just about academics; it was here that he co-founded IBU’s first-ever student journal, igniting his passion for journalism.

- The Call to Journalism

Cihad’s transition from IT to journalism might seem unconventional, but for him, it was a natural evolution. “My passion for storytelling and uncovering the truth drew me to journalism. The desire to tell stories to others was my main motivation,” he explains.

His innate curiosity and adaptability, cultivated during his time at IBU, equipped him for the challenges of a media career.

- Proud Moments in Journalism

Over the course of a decade-long career, Cihad has achieved numerous milestones. One of his proudest moments was covering the Balkan route of Middle Eastern refugees, particularly Syrians, who walked through North Macedonia in search of safety.

“Seeing Syrians now regaining their country makes me proud and somehow happy,” he reflects.

- Looking Ahead

Cihad is not one to rest on his laurels. His future aspirations include delving deeper into investigative journalism and contributing to stories that inspire change. “Long-term, I hope to mentor young journalists and expand my expertise through innovative media projects,” he says.
