Dean of the Faculty of Education, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Igballe Miftari-Fetishi was invited as Keynote speaker at the International Scientific Conference on Education, Technology and Innovation" (ICETI 2024) on Monday, December 16, 2024.
The topic of her presentation was entitled "Assessment in the AI Era: A Challenge or a Must in Contemporary Education?"
During her presentation, Prof. Miftari-Fetishi discussed relevant issues in education, among which the main focus was on the influence of AI in the process of teaching, learning and assessment.
Additionally, the advantages and disadvantages of AI in current teaching were elaborated, together with the ethical norms of its usage.
Prof. Miftari-Fetishi emphasized that a means of how to surpass the influence of AI were through the traditional methods of teaching and within in-class activities and also pointed out that a balance between using AI for enhancement and as a helping tool would help in the process.
By assessing the quality of interaction between students and AI, educators can maintain academic integrity while still embracing the potential benefits. Tasks that require problem-solving, critical thinking and creativity were highlighted as particularly resistant to AI overreach, as they demand original input from the students and cannot be fully automated.
One of the key insights is the need for authentic assessment and assignments that reflect real-world challenges and require student input and ideas. A balance among tasks and tools is a must, said Prof. Miftar-Fetishi and as much as AI is a challenge it is also a must in contemporary education.
